Did you know that Kristin, our Child and Youth Program Coordinator, trained as a teacher and helped run the Education Department at Heritage Park for several years before joining the Calgary MFRC? Kristin would like to put her training to good use and be of service to our community during these unprecedented times. She focused her studies in Elementary Education with a specialization in Social Studies, and so will be the most helpful in the subjects English Language Arts/Literacy and Social Studies.
Kristin will be holding Online Office Hours every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00-3:30 (via Zoom). Meetings will be 25 minutes long and by appointment.
Kristin can offer support in the following ways:
Reading support (K-6). Kristin is happy to support any Guided Reading program from your child’s classroom teacher. She will practice reading with your child and focus on any areas targeted by your child’s teacher (decoding, comprehension, etc.)
Writing support (K-12). Kristin can provide grade-level appropriate help for any written work your child may be struggling with; from forming sentences in early grades to high school English and Social Studies essays.
Math/Numeracy (K-4). Kristin may not have specialized in mathematics, but she’s happy to help support your early learners on their journey. She can also share resources to help support students in older grades.
Social Studies (K-12). Social Studies is the subject closest to Kristin’s heart. From questions about your neighbourhood, to assignments about Canadian Sovereignty, Kristin is happy to help your child on their journey to becoming informed, engaged citizens and critical thinkers.
Science (K-9). There’s so much science we can do at home with our kids, from Kitchen Chemistry to experimenting with building materials, to looking at the lifecycles in our own back yards. Kristin is happy to help and advise with any at home science projects you and your children are working on.
Support for Parents. We know that none of you ever expected you’d be the ones managing your children’s day-to-day learning, and that it’s a huge job! Especially if you’re managing multiple grades AND trying to get your own work done. Your kids’ classroom teachers are doing a great job providing learning packages and meeting with your kids, one on one and as a whole class as much as they can, but they have time and resource limitations too! If you have questions about how to support your children’s learning – from specific assignments to just knowing what “grade-level” looks like, Kristin can help answer your questions and reassure you that you’ve got this and you’re doing it right!
