Life Management Thinkstock Life Management Courses All Life Management courses run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the 4 Wing Military Family Resource Centre Society (MFRCS) unless otherwise noted. Courses are open to all Cold Lake Residents (18+). Effective Communication (2-day course): Participants will begin with an introduction to the basic dynamics of human interaction, and will learn about their dominant communication style and how to recognize their own communication barriers. Participants will also learn how perspectives, assumptions, culture and values relate to and affect communication, and will receive tips and strategies for communicating more effectively with others. In addition, this course will examine communication interaction patterns within groups, and will introduce participants to the different stages of group development and the styles of communication required at each stage. Effective feedback principles will be discussed and guidelines for feedback delivery provided. Dealing with Difficult People (2-day course): Participants will learn how to handle difficult people effectively. This training explores 10 types of behaviours, the intent behind, and impact of those behaviours, the options for dealing with those behaviours, and more. Creating Possibilities: The Art of Effective Leadership (2-day course): Redefine your notion of leadership! Starting with the premise that anything is possible, successful teams and organizations require everyone to participate in meaningful ways. This two-day course will challenge you to find the leader within, regardless of your position or title within an organization. Assertiveness Training: This course explores the foundations of assertiveness, the behavioural continuum (non-assertive, assertive and aggressive behaviours), and introduces strategies for the development of assertiveness. Coping with Change: Participants will learn how to recognize the ways in which they react to and cope with change, and will learn strategies for coping with fear, stress and grief in relation with change. Stress Management: Participants will learn how to identify the sources of stress (stressors) and discover the positive and negative effects of stress. Participants will also learn several practical stress management techniques. Conflict in the Workplace: Participants will learn to recognize common sources of conflict in the workplace, will learn about the escalation of conflict, and will examine the role they play in conflict scenarios. Participants will also learn strategies for managing and reducing conflict. Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training ASIST (2-day course): Participation in the full two days is required. Small group discussions and skills practice are based upon adult learning principles. Powerful videos on suicide intervention will be presented. Feel challenged and safe in the small class setting as you learn suicide first aid. safeTALK (3.5 hours): This 3.5 hour workshop will alerts you to the warning signs indicating a risk of suicide. The workshop emphasizes the importance of recognizing the signs, communicating with the person at risk, and getting help or resources for the person at risk. St John First Aid (2-day course) 16+: Participation in the full two days is required. This course provides all the skills required for Adult, Child and Infant Resuscitation; choking.
