Second Language Training

Conversation Ensemble:
Conversation Ensemble is a casual, interactive and safe environment to practice your second language. Each week a new topic will be presented with new vocabulary. Attend one week or participate in them all. This program is free to all community members.

General Program Information
Second Language Training (SLT)
English and French programs offer a variety of training opportunities to advance second language skills in either official language.  Programs also assist with preparing for and adapting to postings in French and English environments by focusing specifically on:

-linguistic survival
-integration to the community
-employment possibilities

Instructor Led Classes
English and French programs offer participants 60 hours of instructor led instruction. Classes are held twice a week for a period of 10 weeks. SLT classes follow a national curriculum adapted from the Canadian Forces Language program.  All required course manuals are included in the course fees. Participants will receive progress reports and a certificate will be issued upon completion of the class.

Progress Level 1  Little or no French/English.
Progress Level 2  Basic class or have some knowledge or experience in French/English.
Progress Levels 3-6  Intermediate level or have a working knowledge of the French/English language and require practice to further develop their skills.

Placement Assessment
A placement assessment can be scheduled prior to the start of each SLT session when deemed necessary. This assessment takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes and is conducted over the phone. The results help determine the current second language level of each participant and are used to place students in the appropriate class.

Fees
Spouses and dependants of military members: $50.00
Community Members: $100.00
Military members: $25.00

Payment will hold your seat on the course and is required at time of registration. Spouses and dependants of military members qualify for reimbursement with an attendance rate of 85% (17 of the 20 classes) and upon return of all borrowed materials.

Class Size
A maximum of ten students per course. Military members and community members are welcome to participate; however, priority will be given to spouses of military members.

Resources
There is a wide range of resources available for community members to utilize and sign-out. Dictionaries, Bescherelles, DVDs, games, self-paced French CD/book programs; self-paced English as a second language DVD programs from beginner to intermediate and much more. Resources can be signed-out during office hours for community members and during class time for students.

Tutorials
One-on-one and small group English tutorials are available to military spouses and dependants.  Tutorials can be offered from pre-level one and up to level 3 to assist non English speakers develop essential language skills.
Military spouses and dependants who anticipate a posting from Cold Lake to a francophone community can get a head start on their French by receiving tutoring or participating in French classes before posting.
Fees are the same as classes.

Conversation Ensemble - French
Anyone with an interest in learning conversational French will benefit from this informal learning program.  Build grammar and vocabulary in addition to increasing your comfort level, all levels of French are welcome. Language resources will be on hand to enhance learning. There is no instructor, participants learn from each other.
It is strictly a drop-in program, therefore no long term commitment required, making it ideal for those interested in pursuing a second language but do not have time for the formal classes.
Free. Group meets once a week depending on the number of participants.
