Working Groups MARPAC Health and Wellness Strategy Initiative

Who are we?
The  MARPAC Health & Wellness Team is a group of helping professionals who work collaboratively to address health and wellness concerns in the Maritime Forces Pacific (MARPAC) community.  Our primary initiative is the MARPAC Health & Wellness Strategy - an ambitious project involving over 70 people determined to create a culture of health and wellness within the defence team in five priority areas.
               
The MARPAC Health and Wellness Strategy continues to progress and accomplish key achievements. Included in those achievments would be the continued collaboration and synergism of the MARPAC Health and Wellness Working Groups facilitated by the Organizational Wellness Working Group. Such synergy has produced new initiatives and expanded others including Bike to Work Week, Anti-bullying Day, Navy and Fleet Runs, Nutrition Wellness month and Bell Let’s Talk, Mental Health and Addiction Awareness weeks.

The working groups are outlined below and they consist of these 5 divisions:


Active Living Working Group

Key Messages:

  • Anywhere, Anyhow, Anytime.
  • 30 minutes a day or 1 hour for kids. Everyday.

Goals

The primary goal of the ALWG is to increase active living rates among MARPAC community members and their families.

Addictions-Free Living Working Group

Key Messages

  • Low Risk Drinking Guidelines – are you following them?
  • Freedom from Smoking IS Possible.

Goals

To develop a culture that encourages healthy lifestyle choices by eliminating tobacco and illicit drug use, and reducing harms associated with alcohol, gambling, and other potentially detrimental behaviours.
The primary goal of the AFLWG is harm reduction related to addiction among MARPAC community members.  The AFLWG targets two lines of operation (both legal substances):
 1)  alcohol and
 2)  tobacco.

Nutrition and Weight Wellness Working Group

Key Messages

  • Size Matters: Portion control is part of maintaining a healthy weight
  • Water: the Drink of Champions!

Goals

To promote and enable a culture of wellness within Maritime Forces Pacific (MARPAC), whereby people have enhanced access to and are motivated to choose healthier foods to improve their overall nutrition and become empowered to make permanent lifestyle changes.

Mental and Social Wellness Working Group

Key Messages

  • Breathe in, Breathe out… Proceed!

Goals

Within the pillars of Health Promotion, the Mental and Social Wellness Working Group supports initiatives to create a culture promoting resiliency among the MARPAC community.  Its goal is to maintain the 80% of the community that are ‘in the green’ in the green.
