Second Language Training

At the Greenwood Military  Family Resource Centre (GMFRC), it is our priority to support language needs and choices of individuals.  We strive to provide second language training (SLT) to military dependants and giving them opportunities to learn either of Canada’s official languages. Spouses and dependants are expected to follow their loved one through postings and learning both official languages can facilitate moves to areas where their first language is not the one spoken. SLT is designed to help participants learn a new language and integrate better into their new community.

Class-led training
Working in partnership with École de langues la Cité Inc. and the 14 Wing Coordinator of Official Languages, we provide quality class-led training to our community.  French and English classes are offered in accordance with the Military Family Services (MFRS) Program. The classes run depending on minimum registration requirements being met and budget.

Priority is given to military families (14 years+). Once the minimum numbers of military family registration requirements are met, and if space is available, other participants can register. Limit of 10 students per class.

  • 3 semesters per year (Fall, Winter and Spring)
  • 10 weeks (6 hours per week)
  • Day or evening class
  • Placement test may be required prior to the start of a second language class to help determine current level (free for military families & $35 for other participants).
Cost
  • Spouses/legal partners/dependants (14 years +) of CAF Regular and Reservist members = $50 (will be refunded once 85% of classes have been attended)
  • CAF Regular and Reservist members = $100 (non-refundable)
  • Retired CAF Regular and Reservist members and their families = $100 non-refundable
  • DND employees & civilians = $250 (non-refundable)
Childcare
Spouses/partners of CAF personnel might be eligible for partial reimbursement of childcare fees incurred while attending courses. Childcare is available at the GMFRC Casual Childcare Centre during daytime courses (spaces limited).

This is a perfect opportunity to meet people and have fun while learning a second language!
