Welcome to Kingston!

Kingston is a vibrant, welcoming, and beautiful community. The city is consistently ranked among the best places to live in Canada. Here is some important information you need to know when you move to Kingston. If you live outside of Kingston, please contact your township for more information.

Kingston and his surrounding are served by three electricity providers: Residential customers can choose to pay Time-of-Use (TOU) electricity prices or tiered prices.

TOU prices reflects the cost of producing electricity at different times of the day based on demand. Time-of-Use prices change three times a day, when demand is at peak, mid-peak and off-peak.

•    Off-peak: when demand for electricity is lowest, and the cost is low
•    Mid-peak: when demand for electricity is moderate, and the cost is moderate
•    On-peak: when demand is highest, and the cost is high

These prices are set by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) twice a year on May 1st and November 1st.

You can find more information about time-of-use demand periods and prices here

With the tiered price option, you can use 1 000 KWh of electricity each month at a lower price. When you reach this limit, a higher price is applied.

Garbage and recycling
The City of Kingston collects one untagged bag or container of garbage each week.  If you have more than that, you will need to buy bag tags to go on extra garbage bags or containers. The City will collect any number of garbage bags/containers – as long as they have a bag tag on them. The Loyalist Township and Gananoque are using a Pay as you throw system for garbage. Every bag needs a tag.

To buy garbage tags, please visit:
Loyalist Township

Recycling must be sorted and placed in the blue bin if it is plastic, aluminum and glass or in the gray bin if it is paper, cardboard or plastic bags. Not sure where to put an item? Find out with the Garbage and Recycling Waste Tool
