Frequently Asked Questions about the PMFRC's Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day Celebrations

Why does Quebec celebrate Saint Jean Baptiste?

Held annually on 24 June, the Fête nationale du Québec (formerly known as Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day) has been a statutory holiday in Québec since 1925. Originally a religious celebration, it took a more patriotic turn in 1834.

The first Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day parade took place in Montréal in 1843. Since 1984, the Mouvement national des Québécoises et Québécois (MNQ) has organized the festivities for the Fête nationale du Québec. Various francophone communities across Canada also celebrate Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day.

Why are you celebrating la fete national de Quebec?
We want to give our local French community the opportunity to take part in an event that they would normally get to celebrate “back home”.  We also want to make them feel welcome and give them the opportunity to connect with other members of the francophone community.

Who is this event for? I am not Francophone or Francophile, can I attend?
This is a family-friendly event.

Everyone is welcome to join us to learn and celebrate Quebecois culture, however please note that all entertainment and information will be in French.
