Tell us more about your role at the PMFRC and the programs you are involved in.
My role at the PMFRC is ‘Integration Support Programmer’. Each programmer here has their own focus but we do work together on some other general programs such as Building Blocks for Parents and the Children’s Deployment Support Program (CDSP).

My focus is on prenatal programming, and programming for babies 0-12 months of age. I am also trained to facilitate programs such as Personality Dimensions, Super Dads Super Kids and women’s programming. There is no typical day for me; I usually spend a lot of time running between locations and programs. When I am in the office, I am planning new programs and keeping in touch with my prenatal moms on our Facebook page.

How long have you worked for the PMFRC?
I have worked at the PMFRC for 21 years. I started as Head Educator at Kiddie Kollege, and was in that position for ten years until I became a Supervisor at South Side Child Care. I also volunteered with the Agency before becoming a programmer. It is a privilege to work with the families in this community.

Tell me about your background (experience, education, etc.)?
My background is in Early Childhood Education and I have been working with parents and children for over 40 years.

What can people expect to see when they first meet you?
People can expect to see a warm smile and a helping hand. I’m often one of their first contacts within the community and I want them to feel welcome and part of the PMFRC.

What is your favourite part about working for the PMFRC?
I love working with families. The best part of my job is meeting an expectant mother and later seeing her ‘mothering’ a healthy newborn baby.

I have a fond memory from my first prenatal nutrition group – a brand new mom arrived with her days-old newborn. She placed the baby in the arms of one of the expectant moms and that mom began to sob. It was the first time that mom had ever held a baby – it was amazing to see. I see many long lasting relationships between mothers grow here.  It is nice to see that you can make a difference in people’s lives.

What is your greatest accomplishment or proudest moment working for the PMFRC?
I am most proud when I see relationships being formed. A lot of mothers walk in the door with virtually no support, even from their partners who may be away. They may be pregnant with their first baby and new to the community. It is rewarding to help bring together a group of women who are going through the same thing.  Watching them create lifelong relationships makes me very proud.

Where are you from and what brought you to Petawawa? How long have you lived here?
I am from Peterborough originally, but my husband’s job brought us to Petawawa 23 years ago. Although we are not military, we have moved around a bit. I really believe that home is where my husband and children are.

What advice do you have for families transitioning to Petawawa?
Don’t judge too quickly. The shopping may not be great, but the beaches and outdoor activities more than make up for it. It is also a great place to raise kids.

What is your favourite thing about living in the area? What is your favourite thing to do in the winter?  The summer?
My favourite thing about Petawawa is how beautiful the surrounding area is. You don’t have to look far to see the river and the Gatineau Hills. It’s equally beautiful in the winter and the summer. You should check out Centennial Park and the Emerald Trail, by the fire hall. It’s a great place to take a walk!
