John grew up in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario and enlisted in the Army in 1990. He was on his 3rd Tour of Afghanistan( Jan. 16 2010) when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED) in the Panjwaii district of Kandahar while leading his section on a joint foot patrol. He was a member of the 1st Battalion (PPCLI) based out of Edmonton. John was described as a "father figure" among the soldiers who had nicknamed him "Toast" as he was "hard and crusty" on the outside but a "softy" on the inside. John was a career soldier and received the following medals South-West Asia Service Medal and Afghanistan Bar, Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal, Commander-in-Chief Unit Commendation, Canadian Forces Decoration, Sacrifice Medal.
