A Brief History of the 8 Wing Pipes & Drums
Formed in December 1960 the 8 Wing Pipes & Drums is a Canadian Forces volunteer Pipe Band comprised of Regular Force Serving Members, Reserve Force Members, Retired Members, and members of the local civilian community.
The band has thrilled audiences at The Virginia International Tattoo, The Copenhagen Tattoo, The Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo, and at Canada 125th celebrations for UN personnel in El Salvador. The band has had great success in competition both in Canada and Scotland, having come 4th at the 2003 Grade 4 World Championships, and winning the 2002 Canadian Grade 4 Championships, among others. At home, the band is a local fixture, performing at schools, senior's homes, and a host of civic and military events each year.
Solo pipers from the band are a regular sight at community events in Belleville, Trenton, and the surrounding areas. On the base, the Pipe Major (or his designate) performs at mess dinners, Change of Commands, and Honourary Colonel Investitures, among many other events on base. In addition, the Pipe Major holds the great honour to pipe for our fallen soldiers, sailors, airmen and airwomen at each Repatriation ceremony.
Come out and Play!
The band is currently accepting new members and students of all age and experience levels. Members of the 8 Wing Pipes & Drums receive professional, full-time instruction, on a very flexible schedule. Membership in the 8 Wing Pipes & Drums is classed as an official secondary duty for 8 Wing personnel. Though the band is classed as a volunteer band, the Pipe Major and Drum Instructor are Regular Force musicians, whose full-time duty is leading, training and administering the Wing Pipes & Drums, to ensure that the band is always ready when called upon by 8 Wing or the surrounding community.
The Pipes & Drums are currently under the direction of Pipe Major (Sgt) Josh McFarlane, and Drum Instructor (Sgt) Mark Passmore.
