16th Annual Invisible Ribbon Gala
16th annual Invisible Ribbon Gala Postponed to 2021
April 7, 2020 – In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the directions provided by the Government of Ontario, and Public Health Agency of Canada, the Trenton Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) has decided against hosting the Invisible Ribbon Gala in 2020. The 16th annual Invisible Ribbon Gala: CANADA, was set to be held on Saturday, May 9, 2020 at the National Air Force Museum of Canada.
In late February, the Trenton MFRC launched the Gala’s theme, fundraising focus, and announced the event’s title sponsor with great community response. The fundraising campaign, which includes the Gala and an online auction that is open to the public prior to the event, had already begun with several confirmed sponsors and ticket holders. Following this momentum, the Trenton MFRC will keep the theme of ‘CANADA’ and bring it to life again next year when the 16th iteration of the fundraising event will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2021. The theme of ‘CANADA’ is a tip of the toque to the place where military families often call home since many military families resonate with the saying, “home is where the military sends us.”
“Many sponsors, donors, and ticket purchasers were sharing their excitement about the theme,” said Special Events Coordinator, Amy LeGresley. “This year’s theme was a way of toasting military families that live across the country from coast to coast and we were so happy to see people connecting with it.”
Another element that will remain the same for next year is the event’s title sponsor. Dibbits Excavating and Landscape Supply, a long-time supporter of military families, has confirmed that they will retain their title sponsor commitment for the Gala in 2021.
“While some elements of the Gala may change between now and next May, we are excited to continue with our theme of CANADA and so grateful that sponsors like Dibbits and others are committed to supporting military families despite the postponement,” said Trenton MFRC Executive Director Tamara Kleinschmidt.
Every Donation Makes A Difference!
When you think of Canada, what comes to mind? Politeness, snowy winters and summers by the lake, bilingualism, freedom, universal health care, hockey, home?
For many military families, answering the common question of “Where are you from?” or “Where is home?” is not an easy task. A military family could start their journey in St. Jean, Quebec, then be posted to Borden, Ontario, or Shilo, Manitoba. Comox, British Columbia could be next, or Gander, Newfoundland, or even Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. Trenton, Ontario may be their last posting, but how would you describe home when you have lived in so many places across Canada? For most, the simple answer is “Home is Canada!” With this in mind, the Trenton Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) is pleased to host its 16th annual Invisible Ribbon Gala: CANADA. On Saturday, May 9, 2020, we will celebrate the true north, strong and, free!
The Invisible Ribbon Gala, held at the National Air Force Museum of Canada, is more than just an evening of community philanthropy. It is about raising awareness of the strength behind the uniform – the strength of military families. Military families are called upon to be resilient and steadfast when their Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) member is called upon in the name of Canada. The unique challenges faced by military families every day can have an impact on the operational effectiveness of a CAF member; which is why we at the Trenton MFRC are dedicated to going above and beyond to ensure military families have the resources they need and the community support behind them to be resilient.
Our primary focus in 2020 is a resource that everyone needs and is something we can all relate to: health care. While as Canadians, we pride ourselves on universal health care, access to a primary care physician is a matter many Canadians face. However, due to the unique challenges of the military lifestyle, military families are often at a higher disadvantage when obtaining a primary care physician. There is even a common misconception that military families receive health care through their CAF base. In fact, according to the Seamless for Canada Initiative, in Canada, 9-10% of civilians do not have a family physician compared to the 24% of military spouses who do not have a family physician. Furthermore, 17% of children of military families do not have a family physician.
To offset this challenge, the MFRC has made it a goal to create sustainable health care solutions for military families. To achieve this, we have identified a short-term and a long-term approach which includes developing partnerships with health care officials and regional health agencies, as well as access to virtual care. In the short-term, the MFRC’s aim is to support military families by facilitating access to virtual health care tools that could help with their immediate health concerns.
To help us achieve this goal, you are invited to show your support for our military families by sponsoring the event, making a donation to our cause or an item to our auction, and attending the Invisible Ribbon Gala: CANADA.
