ORGANIZERS AND SPONSORS
The Contest is organized by the Imaging Systems Program Management (ISPM) of the Canadian Forces Intelligence Command (CFINTCOM), and the Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services (CFMWS). Various companies from industry provide prizes and awards.
FREQUENCY AND TIMING
The Canadian Armed Forces Imagery Contest (formerly known as The DND/CAF Photo Contest) is held annually. Entries will be accepted between 15 June and the closing date of 1 September.

Note: The contestants must indicate on the Entry Form his/her affiliation with CAF/DND as described in the Eligibility criteria. Members and their families who are directly associated with the organizing, running, sponsoring or judging of this contest, are specifically excluded from participating.
Each contestant must submit his/her entries in only one of two classifications: Novice or Advanced. The contestant must choose the classification which best, and most fairly, fits their own ability and experience in the field of photography using the following guidelines:
Novice classification is for those contestants that meet ALL of the following criteria:
Advanced classification is for those contestants that meet ANY of the following criteria:
- Photography is a hobby not a profession;
- have never entered in the CAF/DND Photo Contest Professional/Advanced Category; and
- have never been awarded Best in Show or Photographer of the Year in previous CAF/DND Photo Contest.
Note: Personnel currently or previously employed as Imagery Technicians, as well as anyone who regularly profits from his/her photography in any way other than photo contests, must submit his/her entries in the Advanced classification.
- Photography is a profession;
- have demonstrated advanced level skills in Photography;
- have previously entered in the CAF/DND Photo Contest Professional/Advanced Category; or
- have been awarded Best in Show or Photographer of the Year in previous CAF/DND Photo Contest.
Anyone requiring further clarification should contact the organizing committee. Based on those guidelines the committee reserves the right to move a contestant from Novice to Advanced.
Contestants may submit entries in any of the following categories.
Note: Basics adjustments such as cropping, sensor dust retouching, sharpening, colour correction and tone adjustments (levels, curves, burning/dodging), are allowed in any categories but only to a level needed to reproduce the original scene. All other manipulation or alterations such as selective colours, adding or deleting any part of the image must be entered in the Altered Image category. High Dynamic Range (HDR) images are only allowed in the Altered Image and Open categories.
- Military Life - This category is defined by those photographs depicting military personnel (in uniform) at work, on duty, on parade, on exercise, on training, on deployment, on operations at home and abroad, using the tools of the trade; or photographs showing military equipment or vehicles in action, where military personnel may not be clearly visible.
- People - This category is defined by photographs of people in all walks of life - parenting and family, children, cute baby pictures, couples and relationships, models / fashion, people engaged in outdoor/indoor activities, wedding and vacation. Including photographs of a person or a group of people posing for the purpose of creating a portrait.
- Animals - This category is defined by those photographs depicting domesticated and wild animals such as: dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, amphibians, zoo and farm animals. However, insects and spiders must be entered in the Macrophotography category.
- Altered Image - This category is defined by those images created or altered using a software or camera special effects mode. Including: composite, panoramics and High Dynamic Range (HDR) images, as well as black and white images with selective colours. Entries in this category must contain photographic images and not only computer generated images. Images used in this category must be original photography of the contestant (or contestants if the image created is a shared work).
- Environment - This category is defined by those photographs depicting the environment. Typical subjects are tourists’ attractions, waterfalls, flora, sunsets, landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes and underwater scenery.
- Macrophotography - This category is defined by those photographs that reproduce a subject larger then its normal physical size. Typical subjects are insects, spiders, flowers and very small objects.
- Sports - This category is defined by those photographs depicting a sports event or people participating in a sports or fitness based activity, emphasizing action.
- Open - This category is defined by those photographs that do not fit particularly well into the previous categories. High Dynamic Range (HDR) images are allowed in this category.
PREPARATION OF ENTRIES
- The organizing committee reserves the right to refuse an entry, or change its title, if the submission is deemed to be inappropriate for the intended audience of the CAF Imagery Contest.
- All entries, without exception, must be submitted as digital files in jpeg file format, all other image format and printed photos will be rejected.
- Contestants may enter one image in each category or more than one image in a single category as long as the total number of images submitted, from each contestant, does not exceed eight (8). Each unique image can only be submitted once and entered in only one category.
- Entries to the Contest must be the original work of the contestant, and must not have been submitted to a previous CAF/DND Photo Contest.
- Black & white or colour images are accepted in all categories.
- The subject material of images must be UNCLASSIFIED.
- The viewable portion of the image must be free of marking such as: Copyright, photographer’s/studio’s name, image number signatures, dates and times.
- Images must be borderless, no matting and framing allowed, in any category other than Altered Image.
- Each image file must be named as follows: once you have entered a title on the Entry Form, name the corresponding digital file using that same title preceded by the image number i.e.: 1-ColdMorning
- Image file names must be no more than 28 characters, using only letters and numbers NO special characters.
- To preserve the highest quality, use the lowest possible amount of compression.
- Horizontal images must be a minimum of 1800 pixels wide.
- Vertical images must be a minimum of 1800 pixels tall.
- Max. 5 MB per image submitted.
MODEL RELEASE REQUIREMENTS
All participants must have Model Release forms signed when the image contains “identifiable” people. A model release is a signed agreement from the subject(s) which states that the photographer is authorized to publish his/her/their picture. A sample model release is available on the website. A model release is not normally required if the picture was taken at a military or public event. The photographers’ own model release form will also be accepted.
The Photographer, at the time of the shoot, must keep in mind the possible future requirement for publication. In those situations where a model release is required and cannot be obtained, the image will not be published.

USE OF ENTRIES
By submitting entries, the contestant agrees that all submissions can be used without further permission, properly accredited, for, but not limited to:
- publication in DND, CAF and CFMWS magazines, posters, calendars, websites and sponsors’ websites approved by the organizing committee;
- display at various DND locations and;
- any other CAF Imagery Contest promotional material.
DND shall assume no liability for not receiving your images.
A panel of three judges, selected based on their photographic experience and background, will select the winning entries at the end of October. All entries will be displayed on a high quality, colour calibrated LCD monitor set at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, in a room with low ambient lighting.
At all times, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, and Honourable Mentions are awarded at the judges’ discretion, i.e. awards do not have to be given if no worthy entry is available in the opinion of the judging panel. The “Photographers of the Year” are chosen in their respective Novice and Advanced classification as follows: each entry that has been awarded 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, or Honourable Mention is awarded a score of 4, 3, 2, and 1 point respectively. The contestants whose entries have been given the highest total score are selected for these awards.
The Patron will select the picture from all submitted entries which best depicts the Canadian Military.
The decision of the contest judges, Patron and committee are final.
PRIZES AND AWARDS
Patron’s Award: will be awarded for the entry selected by the contest Patron which best depicts the Canadian military (Advanced or Novice classification).
Photographer of the Year - Novice: will be awarded to the contestant who receives the highest total of points in the Novice classification.
Photographer of the Year - Advanced: will be awarded to the contestant who receives the highest total of points in the Advanced classification.
Best in Show – Novice: will be awarded for the entry judged best amongst all First Place winners in the Novice classification.
Best in Show – Advanced: will be awarded for the entry judged best amongst all First Place winners in the Advanced classification.
First, Second, Third Place and Honourable Mention
*Travel and Accommodations may be provided to attend the Award Ceremony. Applies to participants who are in Canada at the time of the ceremony and budget permitting.
* *Winners must accept prizes provided (no substitutions) and may be required to sign a Prize Acceptance Agreement. This document must be completed, signed and returned to sender prior to mailing of prize. Winners must also sign a Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risks, and Indemnification Agreement.
ANNOUNCEMENT OF WINNING ENTRIES
The list of winners in all categories will be announced on the website and sent to all participants that have provided an email address by 31 October.
By entering the contest, Contestants grant permission to the CAF Imagery Contest Organization to publish his/her name, city, province of residence, photo, video, or any likeness and details of their prize(s) and awards(s) for advertising or publicity purposes without any additional compensation and winning Contestants agree to sign a Declaration and Release Form to this effect.
