Child Care

Accessibility

A variety of options exist, many of which will depend on the location of the family, from babysitters from the local community to day care centers, drop offs, some church programs, base child-care centers and in home services.

Cost

Care through military child-care centers are $5/hour for temporary or hourly care. Many in-home sitters ask for the minimum wage of $10.10/hour but it will vary with the experience of the sitter and number of children, so cost per hour can reach $20/hour. We have a few young adults in the community that are occasionally willing to babysit as well. Please contact MFS Hawaii for names and contact numbers.

Work Related Absence

Historically, deployments do not occur in Hawaii, however significant work related absences may occur for things like training/courses/TDs and position specific work trips. If a member is away for more than 2 weeks, MFS Hawaii will be more than happy to offer in-person personalized visits such as coffees and respite child-care may be possible.

In some circumstances, respite child care (temporary and short-term) may also be available such as when a family is new to a community and has not set up their Family Care Plan, when it is necessary for the health and wellness of the primary care provider, during a work-related absence of the CAF member or if one of the parents is seriously injured or ill and requires such assistance to recover.

Please contact MFS Hawaii for names and contact information for members of our Ohana that are willing to provide babysitting services to our Ohana in our local community or to inquire about respite care.
