Regular and Specialized Day Camps
Day camps are often a headache for parents of children with special needs. Depending on the region, there are specialized camps that offer adapted stays, offered by qualified instructors who have the necessary resources to make a summer that is both memorable and safe for children. However, this type of camp is not accessible to everyone. Some regions further from major centers have little or no access to them. Often, places are limited (to ensure an adequate child-worker ratio) and therefore very quickly filled. Also, these camps do not have the same subsidies as the regular camps offered by the municipality, which can substantially increase registration costs in some cases.
More and more, some regular day camps offer a support service for children with special needs (ratio of 1 to 1, 1 to 2 or 1 to 3 depending on the child's needs). It is essential to contact your camp early enough in the process in order to present your child's needs and to discuss the measures necessary for their proper functioning.
In any case, when registering, it is essential for the camp to obtain as much information as possible about your child's needs in order to allow him to assess his capacity to welcome him adequately. The search for accommodation is an approach that must be carried out in collaboration with the family.
